Learning DisabilitiesToday, there are many fine choices available for a child with learning disabilities. (If your child has a learning disability; he/she has average or above average intelligence and his/her achievement in one or more of the following areas reading, writing, mathematics, spelling listening or speaking does not match his/her potential). Because there are varying degrees of learning disabilities, there are different options with different levels of support available. Each child with a learning disability has his/her own combination of talents and needs.
Some independent day and boarding schools have specialized learning centers and the teachers receive in service training to help them understand different learning styles. Public school systems offer support services if the student’s learning disability fits the system’s definition and formula of a learning disability. There are also day and boarding schools that specialize in students with learning disabilities. At these schools every faculty member has training and experience teaching students with learning disabilities. Other options include a specialized summer programs that will enhance your child’s skills and/or hiring a tutor with a specialized background while the child remains in his/her current setting. I can find the school with right amount of challenge and support to fit your child’s learning profile. |
